MTN Cameroon remained firmly in control of the telecoms market in the first six months of 2016 but reported a drop in business from the same time last year, in part because the number of out going calls in its network fell.
The company’s interim financial statement shows as much of 8.7% drop on turnover during the first half of the year. Nonetheless, MTN increased its revenue from data services, thanks to its expanding 3G and 4G networks. Many more people, more than two million, are also using MTN Mobile Money.
The drop in calls appears to be the result of thousands of disconnections conducted under the user registration process that ended in June. Communication through messaging and voice/video calling applications is also likely to have hurt the company.
MTN has nonetheless continued to grow, adding about 400,000 new customers to its base since December 2015.
