Brewery giant to pick up 2 million plastic bottles
July 30, 2016
Brewery giant Société Anonyme des Brasseries du Cameroun (SABC), maker of the popular 33 Export and Castel beer brands, has employed hundreds of holidaymakers to collect two million plastic bottles dumped in streets, waterways and bushes in Yaounde and Douala.
Plastic bottles account for about 35% of non-degradable waste in Cameroon. SABC, a subsidiary of French Groupe Caster, owns a water bottling company la Société des Eaux Minérales du Cameroun, which produces Source Tangui. The company also supplies non-alcoholic sodas like Coca Cola, Sprite and its Top, D’jino brands in plastic bottles.
SABC is patterning with garbage collection company Hysacam and two non-profits to carry out the collections.
