Seven prisoners are writing the June 2015 session of the General Certificate of Education exams in Buea.
The candidates from the Buea central prison are sitting for the Ordinary Level at the Government High School Bokwango.
Warders accompanied the inmate to the examintation center but stayed out of the exam halls.
It is the first time penitentiary inmates have sat the exam in the school, said an official.
The prison in Buea used to be a production prison where inmate were taught skills in agriculture and other handicrafts.
But it has since been nothing more than a lockup facility.
One of the inmates, Tita Gilbert, said they had no problems preparing for the exams, reported Cameroon Tribune.
“I prayed that the same God who has given us the knowledge to write will be with us all through the exams,” he said.
Thousands of other candidates began sitting for the end of secondary school exams across the country on Monday.
Others are writing the Advanced Level, which qualifies students for most university studies.
